What should you do about a child who gags on rice/oatmeal cereal?

My 7 Month old Daughter has been eating cereals since 5 months. Now that I've given her mostly all the Vegetables, and almost done all the fruits, she gags on the cereals. I tried to really water them down, and still she gags?? What should I do?

  1. stop feeding it to her...
  2. try her on different brands,if you haven't already. If she still does the same just don't give her it.Try weetabix or readybrek it is worth a try.It sounds like she is eating a good varied diet anyway.I wouldn't' worry babies all go through phases.
  3. Have you tried mixing fruit with the cereal or even veggies with the cereal? My son hated the cereal after he had tried all the other foods so I had to mix them together. If that doesnt work, I would talk to your pediatrician about other things you could use to substitute the cereal. Good Luck.
  4. Sounds like she doesn't like cereal. She doesn't need it, so just skip it. Offer fruits and veggies and meats if she likes those, and don't worry about the cereal.
  5. This ought to do the trick. Try mixing in pure apple sauce in order to get a similar taste and texture as the fruits and veggies~ Watering down the cereal might make it slide down her throat TOOOOO fast to swallow.
  6. My son is also 7 months old and does the same thing. I noticed though he is only doing it because he does not like it. So I brought the rice cereal with bananas in it and he loves it. The regular rice cereal he will gag on but the banana one he will not. So I suggest trying one of the ones with some fruit in it. Good Luck!
  7. It might be that she is allergic to them or something in them, rather try yogurt and carrots or mash potato from your plate.
  8. Pippin is right, cereal really isn't necessary and it sounds like she doesn't like it. Try making your own oatmeal or using some baby oatmeal and add fruit and cinnamon and/or nutmeg. She will love it.
  9. Mix cereal with fruit or vegetables.
  10. She simply doesn't like them. My daughter refuses to eat it too. For breakfast I give her small pieces of chopped ripe fruit, yogurt and toast soldiers. She loves it. The rice cereal is pretty much useless except for the iron content which can be substituted with toast, cheerios, oatmeal or any other iron rich foods. Bottom line, rice cereals are not essential, far from it.
