I have a 10 month old who gags on different texture foods, what do I do?

I've been trying to feed him different foods and he gags and then pukes all over. He will eat the stage 2 food and that's it, when I try the stage 3 he gags. I tried different table foods and he'll only eat mashed potatoes and soft food similar to them. I don't know if it is something I should talked to his Dr. about or just keep trying.

  1. It's normal, it just feels weird in his mouth and going down his throat he'll get the hang of it. He's just not too sure about those chunks :)
  2. My son always hated stage 3 also. He went straight from stage 2 to finger foods, sometime around 11 months. He would eat foods that he could pick up, but nothing that I mashed for him He liked all the foods that he ate pureed, just cooked and cut into small pieces. I would keep trying!
  3. stop giving him those foods Yes! another best answer! :)
  4. I know it sounds odd, but forget the small soft lumps and try big hard ones. Bread sticks, adult pasta spirals (cooked of course), whole pieces of cooked broccoli, cooked carrot sticks - basically things he can pick up and chew on while still holding. Loads and loads of babies get really confused by things which they can _almost_ swallow without chewing but not quite. Try him on things he _has_ to chew.
